Job Summary

The Office of Public Affairs & Communications (PINF/OPAC) within the Division of Institutional Advancement at UC Santa Barbara is seeking a full-time Web Developer to bring technical expertise to the university’s web presence. This role involves collaborating with departmental, divisional, and campus-wide teams to create an innovative, user-friendly, and cohesive digital experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Defining and refining a central web development framework and associated standards for UC Santa Barbara.
  • Ensuring high-quality design, UX, UI, performance, and accessibility across new and existing websites through full-stack development.
  • Creating engaging and interactive digital experiences that enhance user engagement.

The ideal candidate is a highly skilled and experienced Drupal developer, proficient in modern web development workflows, UX/UI best practices, and digital accessibility standards. They should be an effective communicator, solutions-driven, and thrive in a collaborative team environment. This position requires initiative, flexibility, self-direction, and an appreciation for higher education and academic values. The Web Developer reports to the Chief Digital Officer, supporting a range of web initiatives, including department (e.g., news.ucsb.edu), central (e.g., ucsb.edu), and select divisional (Institutional Advancement) projects.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 4–6 years of experience with modern web development workflows and operations, including multi-dev hosting environments (e.g., Pantheon), version control (Git), and build tools (e.g., GitHub, Docker, Composer).
  • 1–3 years of experience using web analytics tools to drive insights and improve website experiences.
  • 1–3 years of hands-on Drupal expertise (including Drupal 10/11), with experience in custom theme development and management of core/custom modules.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of web applications, programming and scripting languages, including JSON, CSS, CSS3, HTML5, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, and SASS.
  • Experience ensuring cross-browser compatibility and implementing security best practices.
  • Proficiency in other CMS platforms, particularly WordPress (advanced knowledge is a plus).
  • Keen attention to quality assurance and accessibility standards.
  • Knowledge of SEO strategy and tactics is a plus.
