About the Job 

Position Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care while assisting in the planning and implementation of treatment to ensure patient comfort and well-being. This role involves caring for patients with various medical conditions or those recovering from surgical procedures, requiring general assessments, interventions, and therapies.

The LPN also plays a vital role in maintaining a safe work environment, adhering to all safety protocols, and demonstrating clinical competency tailored to the age, developmental stage, and specific needs of each patient.

Key Responsibilities:

The following outlines the general functions performed by an LPN. Actual duties may vary based on assignments and client needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Deliver compassionate nursing care to ensure patient comfort and well-being.

  • Execute nursing interventions as prescribed, within the scope of practice.

  • Administer oral, sublingual, topical, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intramuscular medications as per guidelines.

  • Perform IV therapy, including preparing IV fluids and equipment within the scope of practice.

  • Change dressings on IV sites and implanted ports as permitted.

  • Conduct venipuncture for blood sample collection and IV initiation within scope.

  • Monitor and document signs of infiltration, injury, or inflammation at injection sites.

  • Assist in administering blood or blood products under supervision.

  • Support complex sterile procedures as needed.

  • Assist physicians during rounds and other medical procedures.

  • Accurately document patient observations, treatments, and responses to care.

  • Collaborate with RNs to develop and revise care plans.

  • Participate in patient and family education, assessing its effectiveness under supervision.

  • Maintain strict infection control practices.

  • Identify potential safety hazards and ensure a secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

  • Uphold confidentiality regarding patient, physician, and staff information.

  • Stay current on best practices in medical-surgical nursing to maintain competency.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform clerical tasks, such as handling reports and documentation.

  • Assist in transporting reports, samples, or supplies as needed.

  • Copy, file, and organize patient charts and related forms.

  • Support procurement and inventory of medical supplies.

  • Provide assistance to other staff members as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education & Certification:

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing program.

  • Hold a current and active LPN license in the practicing state.

Experience:

  • At least one year of recent experience as a Medical-Surgical LPN in a clinical setting.
