About the Job

Key Responsibilities

  • Builds proficiency in clinical pharmacy practice, including selecting appropriate drug therapies and resolving medication-related issues. Develops the ability to assess drug interactions (e.g., drug-drug, drug-food, drug-lab, and drug-disease) and customize treatment based on patient-specific factors like body size, organ function, and medical conditions.

  • Supports seamless medication management during patient transitions such as admissions, transfers, and discharges.

  • Accurately reviews and interprets medication orders.

  • Gains competency in medication dispensing and compounding, ensuring practices align with established pharmaceutical standards and comply with departmental policies and legal regulations.

  • Encourages adherence to the drug formulary, recommends cost-effective alternatives when appropriate, and promotes waste reduction.

  • Participates in initiatives to enhance medication safety, including event reporting and contributing to quality improvement efforts.

  • Assists in onboarding and training new pharmacy staff, may supervise pharmacy interns, residents, or students. Acts as a resource to pharmacy technicians to maintain efficient workflow and service delivery.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements

  • Must hold a valid pharmacist license in the state of employment.

  • For patient-facing roles, immunization and injectable medication certifications may be required—either from Wisconsin or an ACPE/Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board–approved program for out-of-state pharmacists.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.

  • No prior experience necessary.

Skills and Abilities

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge in pharmacy practice.

  • Strong computer literacy.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Well-developed organizational, presentation, and training abilities.

  • Demonstrates effective decision-making, teamwork, customer service, and conflict resolution.

  • May require certification in life support courses based on departmental needs.

Physical and Work Environment Conditions

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.

  • Occasionally required to lift up to 35 lbs. independently.

  • Must possess functional speech, vision, and hearing abilities.

  • May be exposed to chemical hazards.

  • Expected to operate standard pharmacy equipment.

  • Work is performed in a typical office and clinical environment.
