Job Description

We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced Consultant Dermatopathologist to join our expanding Cellular Pathology Service. This full-time position is ideal for applicants with an established interest in Dermatopathology who are eager to develop specialist diagnostic and research skills alongside expert clinical teams. As a Consultant Dermatopathologist, you will have the opportunity to shape services and contribute to ongoing innovations within our department. Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practice and be on the Specialist Register or eligible within six months of the Advisory Appointments Committee.

 About the Cellular Pathology Service

Our Cellular Pathology Service, based at a modern pathology centre on the Southmead Hospital site, supports clinical services across Bristol and Weston. As a trusted regional provider, the department also offers cervical screening services to the South West and houses an Essential Services Laboratory at Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Recently, we introduced a digital pathology system through our pathology network, creating opportunities for remote and flexible working. While this post is permanent, we are open to fixed-term arrangements (minimum one year) for suitable candidates. A generous Recruitment and Retention Premium of up to £20,000 and relocation support is available for permanent hires.

 Consultant Dermatopathologist — Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist Dermatopathology diagnostic services to Bristol, Weston, and other NHS Trusts across the southwest.

  • Collaborate with fellow Histopathologists in supporting diverse clinical services.

  • Participate in teaching, supervision of junior medical staff and students, audits, and research activities.

  • Engage with ongoing service development and contribute to innovations in Dermatopathology.

 Essential Skills & Qualifications for Consultant Dermatopathologist

Essential:

  • Full and specialist GMC registration (or eligibility within six months).

  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent.

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) or equivalent qualification.

Desirable:

  • Higher academic qualifications such as MD or PhD.

  • Management qualifications and experience with UK hospital systems.

 Experience & Personal Qualities for Consultant Dermatopathologist

Essential:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the NHS healthcare system and experience within a Cellular Pathology service.

  • Strong communication, motivational, and organisational abilities.

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and research initiatives.

Desirable:

  • Experience in UK hospital environments and published peer-reviewed research.

  • Attendance at healthcare management or leadership courses.
