An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join the Anaesthetic Department at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The successful Consultant Anaesthetist will provide anaesthetic services for a wide range of surgical specialities, including regional Upper GI, Orthopaedics, and Trauma. The department also supports Critical Care and Obstetric services. Job plans can be tailored to suit the successful candidate’s interests and expertise while meeting the department’s needs. The Critical Care Unit, a combined 12-bed ITU and HDU, continues to expand with new teaching and simulation areas to support a comprehensive clinical training program.

This full-time Consultant Anaesthetist post consists of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including 7 for Direct Clinical Care and 3 for Supporting Professional Activities. The role covers anaesthesia for theatres with a focus on orthopaedic and trauma services. The successful candidate will also support emergency and obstetric anaesthesia, joining the on-call rota for general and obstetric cases, currently a 1:11 rota.

 Consultant Anaesthetist — Key Responsibilities

As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you’ll be responsible for delivering anaesthetic services across various surgical specialities and supporting critical and obstetric care units. Duties include:

  • Providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency theatre lists

  • Participating in a 1:11 on-call rota covering general and obstetric anaesthesia

  • Teaching, supervising junior doctors and medical students

  • Contributing to the department’s ongoing clinical audit, service development, and multidisciplinary collaboration

 Consultant Anaesthetist — Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • GMC registration with a license to practise

  • FRCA or equivalent qualification

  • CCT (or within 6 months of award)

  • Minimum 7 years’ anaesthesia experience, with at least 1 year in the NHS

  • Higher training in key surgical anaesthetic subspecialties, including orthopaedic, obstetric, paediatric, and regional anaesthesia

Desirable Criteria:

  • Medical Education Certificate

  • Higher academic qualifications (MD/PhD)

  • European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia

  • Evidence of leadership and research participation
