Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with NYPD and internal QDA squads to resolve complex cold case homicides and cases involving unidentified human remains.

  • Managing a caseload of active cold case investigations and indictments.

  • Interviewing witnesses, law enforcement personnel, and forensic experts.

  • Reviewing unsolved homicide cases to determine the potential for DNA testing or other advanced forensic methodologies.

  • Coordinating with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, NYPD, and other agencies to facilitate forensic testing and develop investigative leads.

  • Drafting subpoenas, search warrants, historical cell site applications, and other legal documents.

  • Preparing arrest reports and prosecution memoranda.

  • Conducting grand jury presentations.

  • Depending on experience, handling or assisting in the trial of cold case homicides.

  • Providing compassionate and respectful communication to families of victims.


Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Hold a J.D. and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar.

  • Have a minimum of four years of post-J.D. experience, including felony trials and grand jury presentations.

  • Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, exceptional organizational and case-management skills, and the ability to work on complex investigations.

  • Possess experience investigating or prosecuting violent crimes involving forensic science, including DNA.

  • Exhibit strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with detectives, outside agencies, and victims’ families.

  • U.S. citizenship and New York State residency are required at the time of appointment (per Public Officers Law Section 3(1)).
