Position Summary
The Residential Aide (RA) plays a vital role in delivering consistent care and support to clients residing in the shelter. Under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor—and with room for independent judgment—the RA provides direct assistance to residents, enforces facility policies, and helps ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all.
Key Responsibilities

Facilitate the intake and discharge process by completing arrival packets, exit logs, and daily occupancy forms.

Utilize the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) CARES system to process check-ins, discharges, and conditional intakes.

Review nightly attendance rosters and incident reports; monitor client sign-in/sign-out activity.

Receive and verify food deliveries; report discrepancies to the Shift Supervisor and Program Operations Director.

Distribute meals in alignment with DHS guidelines and dispose of expired food appropriately.

Provide room access, assist with room transfers, and ensure client belongings are appropriately bagged and tagged.

Maintain facility cleanliness including office, microwave, refrigerator, and restroom spaces; properly dispose of office trash.

Deliver DHS communications (e.g., appointment slips, mail, and notices) to residents.

Conduct regular rounds to check room security, monitor clients’ well-being, and report safety or maintenance issues.

Support clients with limited mobility or health issues through hourly safety checks.

Alert medical staff and supervisors immediately in case of medical emergencies or concerning client behavior.

Conduct inspections for newly assigned rooms and coordinate readiness with housekeeping and maintenance.

Maintain and submit logs (attendance, emergency contacts, ACS, etc.) on a monthly basis and prepare archival files as required.

Adhere to the professional dress code and maintain a presentable, respectful demeanor at all times.

Serve daily meals during scheduled timeframes and log food delivery records as required.

Finalize the Night Signature Roster (NSR) in CARES and ensure logbooks are updated monthly.

Deliver mail during daytime shifts and properly log time entries using the time clock and site logbook.

Remain available for overtime or shift coverage based on program needs.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Valid New York State Security Guard License.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in single adult shelters or congregate residential programs.

Experience working with families or the homeless population preferred.

Current Food Protection Certification and CPR/First Aid required.

Successful completion of background check required.

Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.

Proactive problem-solving abilities with capacity to work independently and collaboratively.

Intermediate computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and a willingness to learn internal systems.
Other Requirements

Flexibility to work extended hours or varied shifts as needed.

Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs periodically.
