Join PerkinElmer as an Automation Engineer – Laboratory Equipment Specialist

PerkinElmer is seeking a skilled Automation Engineer to enhance our laboratory equipment servicing team. This Automation Engineer role is pivotal in providing on-site support at our customer’s facility in Stevenage. As a key member of our technical services team, you’ll be embedded within the department, delivering first-line software, technical, and hardware support for automated platforms and benchtop liquid handlers to ensure optimal system reliability.

Key Responsibilities of the Automation Engineer:

  • Serve as the initial contact for critical equipment breakdowns, minimizing disruptions to scientific activities.

  • Conduct ongoing system performance analyses using error logs, live run interventions, and root-cause analysis to prevent recurring issues.

  • Facilitate technical mediation for prolonged equipment issues involving multiple vendors.

  • Assist in developing training materials tailored to automation platforms for both LIS Engineers and the client’s scientific staff.

  • Implement proactive maintenance strategies for key equipment.

  • Oversee and participate in equipment support activities.

  • Train scientists on best practices for operating automated equipment to ensure optimal performance.

  • Develop support solutions aligned with departmental requirements to enhance service delivery.

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendor service organizations.

  • Stay informed about new developments in laboratory automation.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of liquid handling automation principles.

  • Experience in a pharmaceutical environment.

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in the biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical industry, or equivalent education and experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a related field preferred.

  • Previous experience as a Field Service Engineer or Application Specialist is advantageous.

  • Leadership experience is a plus.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient in troubleshooting and problem-solving with limited training.

  • Strong technical writing abilities.

  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).

  • Effective communication skills, including during audits and interactions with leadership.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize conflicting deadlines under pressure.

  • Ability to collaborate with international counterparts to achieve global objectives.

  • Passionate about robotics and automation, with a keen interest in applying technical knowledge in laboratory settings.
