About the Role
The State Bar of California’s Regulation Division, through its Client Trust Account Protection Program (CTAPP), seeks an Accountant or Senior Accountant to help safeguard client funds held in trust by California attorneys. This role involves performing compliance reviews and complex investigative audits to ensure adherence to legal and ethical standards, including the Rules of Professional Conduct. The position requires preparing detailed reports, communicating findings, recommending corrective actions, and collaborating with external accountants. The Senior Accountant takes on more complex audits, exercises greater independent judgment, and may review the work of other accountants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct compliance reviews and investigative audits of attorney trust accounts.

  • Analyze findings, prepare reports, and communicate results clearly.

  • Recommend corrective actions for violations of professional conduct.

  • Oversee external accountants’ adherence to State Bar policies.

  • Collaborate with senior management on policy and procedural improvements.

  • Manage the full compliance review process efficiently.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or accounting required; Master’s preferred.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in financial or compliance auditing.

  • Active CPA license from California Board of Accountancy required; CPA must be maintained during employment.

  • Preferred certifications: Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and GAAS principles.

  • Proficient in audit software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.

  • Adaptability in a dynamic environment and commitment to integrity.
