Job Description

National Grid Electricity Distribution is offering an exciting opportunity for a Craftsperson (Fitting) to join our team at the Derby depot. In this key role, you will be responsible for the maintenance of plant and switchgear up to 66kV, supporting the reliable delivery of electricity to millions of customers.

You’ll contribute to a high-performing, safety-first culture and ensure critical assets operate efficiently, safely, and within regulatory standards. This is a hands-on role ideal for skilled tradespeople or those with potential who are ready to upskill through structured training and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on plant and switchgear up to 66kV.

  • Coordinate and monitor work programmes for yourself and immediate team members.

  • Perform switching operations up to 66kV safely and in accordance with established procedures.

  • Maintain accurate records of work completed and ensure compliance with safety standards.

  • Participate in on-call and standby rota duties as required.

  • Uphold health and safety requirements at all times, including working at height where necessary.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • GCSEs (A*-C/4-9) in English and Maths or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2.

  • Previous experience in electrical fitting, particularly with plant and switchgear, is highly desirable.

  • Must live within 40 miles of the Derby depot (DE24).

  • A full UK driving licence is essential due to the mobile nature of the role.

  • Candidates must be physically fit to meet the demands of the role, including working at height (subject to safety equipment weight restrictions).

  • Willingness to undergo a DBS check and meet all vetting requirements for this safety-critical role.

Desirable (or Willingness to Work Towards)

  • City & Guilds Level 2 in Electrical Engineering (training provided if not already held).

  • TAR completion (including diary pages, practical tasks, and reports).

  • Experience with 66kV switching operations and safety documentation procedures.
