Position Summary:
Cherokee Nation is seeking a highly motivated Cherokee Language Apprentice to advance fluency and preserve Cherokee cultural knowledge through intensive language immersion. Working closely with highly proficient or first-language speakers, the apprentice will enhance their own Cherokee language proficiency while helping develop curriculum, document content, and contribute to the long-term revitalization of the Cherokee language and worldview.
Key Responsibilities:
Language Immersion & Proficiency Development

Work directly with distinguished or superior Cherokee speakers

Engage in advanced conversation and literacy in Cherokee

Utilize immersion-based methods to strengthen personal and team language skills
Curriculum & Resource Development

Collaborate on lessons and materials to support advanced Cherokee speakers
-
Assist in building curriculum and teaching methodology
-
Document and interpret high-proficiency Cherokee speech content
Program & Team Support

Provide guidance to other staff on language development

Assist with language skill assessments and evaluation tools

Help compile and analyze source material for program improvement

Transport program participants as needed

Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Education:

High school diploma or GED OR
-
Certification as a First Language Speaker by the Department of Cherokee Language
Experience:
-
No prior experience required
Certifications & Licenses:
-
Valid U.S. driver’s license
-
Driving record must meet Cherokee Nation insurance underwriting standards
Other Requirements:

Must be a first language Cherokee speaker

Cannot be listed on U.S. OIG or GSA exclusion/sanction lists

May require background clearance if working with child care-related programs
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

Must be able to sit, walk, speak, hear, and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs

Vision: close, distance, color, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Work may involve exposure to outdoor conditions

Moderate noise level expected in typical work settings
