Job Summary
The Patient Account Representative is responsible for managing patient accounts throughout the revenue cycle, from creation to final payment. This role involves claim follow-up, insurance collections, remittance review, and resolution of disputed balances with both government and non-government payors. Candidates should have a working knowledge of commercial insurance, managed care, Medicare, and Medicaid.
This is a fast-paced role that requires independence, collaboration, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing assignments.
Key Responsibilities

Review, research, and resolve patient accounts using internal systems and payer websites.

Submit claims, follow up with payors, and address disputed balances.

Update insurance and demographic data, request documentation, and escalate issues as needed.

Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations in billing and collections.

Document claim status and account actions clearly in patient accounting systems.

Meet productivity and quality standards while maintaining an up-to-date desk inventory.

Identify payer trends, delays, or workflow inconsistencies and communicate them to leadership.

Participate in special projects, team meetings, and training to enhance job knowledge.

Interact professionally with patients, physicians, attorneys, insurance plans, and team members.
Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in business or accounting preferred.

1–4 years of experience in medical claims and/or hospital collections.

Strong understanding of revenue cycle processes, insurance collections, EOBs, UB04 and HCFA 1500 forms.

Familiarity with HMO, PPO, IPA, capitation, and managed care contracts.

Strong communication (oral & written), problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

Intermediate Microsoft Office skills; ability to learn hospital systems quickly.

Typing speed of at least 45 WPM.
