Job Description Summary

This role outlines the essential functions and responsibilities of the Assistant Unit Manager (AUM), though it is not exhaustive, and duties may be assigned or reassigned based on departmental needs.

The Assistant Unit Manager (AUM) serves as a frontline manager responsible for ensuring a safe, patient-centered environment. As part of the clinical team, the AUM supervises, coaches, and supports direct patient care Registered Nurses (RNs). The AUM exercises discretion and independent judgment in overseeing a team of licensed and unlicensed nursing personnel during their shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the leadership team (Manager, Director, Administrative Nursing Supervisor, and other AUMs) to ensure continuity of care between shifts.

  • Acts as a resource for staff members, providing guidance and support.

  • Serves as a role model and positive influence, fostering changes that support patient care excellence.

  • Utilizes interpersonal skills to promote outstanding customer service, ensuring safe, evidence-based patient care and professionalism.

  • Contributes to a supportive and cooperative work environment within a culturally diverse workforce and patient population.

Job Requirements and Prerequisites

Education:

  • Current California State Registered Nurse license.

  • BSN required; or must obtain BSN within 5 years for internal candidates.

  • BLS certification required.

  • ACLS certification required in monitored areas.

Experience:

  • Meets minimum CNII requirements.

  • Two years of direct patient care experience (or one year with an MSN), with at least one year of experience in the appropriate clinical care area. This experience is essential for developing advanced skills in nursing care, unit operations, and staffing.

Licensure and Certifications:

  • Registered Nurse (required at hire).

  • Basic Life Support (required at hire).

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (required at hire).

  • Integrative Agitation Management (IAM) certification required within 30 days of hire.

Prerequisite Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to lead unit personnel, foster teamwork, manage conflict, and maintain effective communication across departments (including physicians).

  • Analytical skills to oversee unit activities, develop care plans, implement nursing strategies, and solve complex patient care and administrative issues.

  • No disciplinary actions within the past year.
