Job Overview

We are hiring a Billing Specialist I to join our remote U.S.-based billing team at Community Health Systems (CHS). In this role, you will be responsible for processing and submitting primary and secondary insurance claims accurately, resolving billing errors and denials, and ensuring compliance with payer and regulatory guidelines. This position is ideal for individuals with up to 1 year of experience in billing or claims and offers the opportunity to work with a national healthcare leader.

Key Responsibilities

  • Submit primary and secondary insurance claims using electronic systems.

  • Audit and correct billing errors, denials, and rejections.

  • Ensure claims meet federal, state, and payer-specific compliance standards.

  • Work with UB-04, CMS-1500, or applicable state-specific billing forms.

  • Collaborate with coding teams, patient access staff, and facility liaisons.

  • Utilize SSI, Pulse/DAR, Athena, and other billing software tools.

  • Document actions taken for claims and ensure accurate records.

  • Escalate unresolved billing issues to Billing Services Manager.

  • Communicate professionally with payers and internal teams.

  • Stay updated on payer policies and healthcare billing regulations.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED (required)

  • Associate’s Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field (preferred)

Experience:

  • 0–1 year of experience in medical billing, insurance claims, or revenue cycle operations (required)

  • 1–3 years of experience in a hospital or ambulatory care setting (preferred)

  • Experience with Athena software and EHR systems (preferred)

Skills:

  • Familiarity with billing systems and claim processing workflows

  • Basic understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer policies

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills

  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines in a remote setting

Certifications:

  • CPB – Certified Professional Biller (preferred)
