About Us

At NY Highways, we bring innovative infrastructure solutions to North Yorkshire and beyond. Operating in close partnership with North Yorkshire Council, we deliver essential highway and property maintenance services with a focus on safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

The Role

We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Buyer / Purchasing Officer to join our growing team. This is a pivotal role supporting procurement for both our highways and property maintenance divisions.

You’ll manage the end-to-end buying process—from placing daily orders and negotiating costs to managing suppliers and resolving delivery issues. Your knowledge of construction or maintenance procurement will help ensure efficient project delivery and support the smooth operation of our services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Place timely orders for building materials, tools, PPE, plant hire, and services

  • Monitor supplier performance and ensure service level agreements are met

  • Maintain regular contact with both suppliers and internal departments

  • Support urgent works and planned maintenance projects with required resources

  • Negotiate pricing and lead times without compromising on quality

  • Manage procurement records and help with resolving invoice queries

  • Use Office 365 and internal systems to track orders, stock, and communications

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience in purchasing or buying—preferably in construction, property maintenance, or the public sector

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple priorities

  • Competence in Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams)

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel if required (mileage reimbursed)

  • Minimum Level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent

What We Offer

  • Salary starting from £29,449, with opportunities for progression

  • Annual leave starting at 24 days, rising to 29 with 5 years’ service, plus bank holidays

  • Training & development pathways to grow your career within NY Highways

  • Job security through regular work from both council and private sector contracts

  • Pension scheme, employee discounts, and other benefits

  • A supportive, forward-thinking work culture and a role with real impact
