Carpenter I

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Carpentry Master Foreman, the Carpenter I performs skilled journeyman-level carpentry work in both rough and finished construction. Work involves responsibility for efficient, safe, and workmanlike performance. Carpenters may be assisted by Trades Helpers or Apprentices and will perform duties under the supervision of a Carpenter Foreman.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Construct and repair cabinets, decks, tables, partitions, windows, and other furniture.

  • Complete drywall, paneling, ceilings, and floor installations.

  • Repair doors, locks, hardware, and screens.

  • Operate woodworking machinery and apply spackling to seams and nail heads.

  • Build forms for pouring concrete and small building additions.

  • Supervise Apprentices and Trades Helpers when assigned.

  • Perform related carpentry and maintenance work as required.

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of carpentry tools, practices, terminology, and safety precautions.

  • Ability to estimate time and materials, operate woodworking machinery, and lay out work.

  • Ability to rig and work from scaffolds; must be in good physical condition.

  • High school diploma, GED, or completion of trade school program required.

  • Previous carpentry experience supplemented by training.

  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license with 5 or fewer current points (max 3 points from Board of Education vehicle violations).

  • Willingness to work day or evening hours as required.

  • Deemed essential personnel; must be available for day, night, or weekend shifts to meet operational needs.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry at least 80 lbs.

  • Strength and dexterity to climb 40-foot ladders, work from scaffolds and bucket trucks.

  • Extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling, and kneeling.

  • Sustained physical effort in dusty, dirty, chemical, solvent, odor, and adverse weather conditions.

Working Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, often near dust, chemicals, solvents, and under varying weather conditions. Protective equipment and adherence to safety protocols are required.
