Key Responsibilities of a Certified Medical Assistant

As a Certified Medical Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in supporting patient care and clinical operations.

• Maintain detailed and accurate patient health records.
• Communicate with patients via phone, video, email, text, Slack, and portal messages with compassion and professionalism.
• Complete a high volume of prior authorizations for medications, especially for weight loss treatments.
• Support providers by handling pharmacy refills, tracking lab results, and managing medical records.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA and protect all patient health information (PHI).
• Follow provider instructions with efficiency, accuracy, and attention to detail.

Qualifications for a Certified Medical Assistant

To excel as a Certified Medical Assistant, you must combine strong technical knowledge with outstanding communication and organizational skills.

Required:

• National Medical Assistant Certification (CMA or RMA) from NHA, AMT, or AAMA.
• Proven experience with CoverMyMeds and prior authorizations (electronic and phone).
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a Medical Assistant; telehealth or remote work is a plus.
• At least 2 years of recent Athenahealth EMR experience (5+ years of total EMR experience).

Preferred:

• Excellent multitasking, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Positive, team-oriented attitude with strong empathy for patients.
