Key Responsibilities of a Certified Medical Coder

 

As a Certified Medical Coder, you’ll be responsible for maintaining precise medical coding practices and supporting revenue integrity through detailed review and collaboration:

  • Review E/M, diagnostic, and procedural documentation to assign accurate CPT and diagnosis codes.
  • Collaborate with the RCM team to identify coding patterns, trends, and discrepancies.
  • Prepare summaries and findings to assist in developing corrective action plans.
  • Support management in creating effective training and education programs.
  • Provide guidance on proper modifier usage to ensure clean claims.
  • Assist in claim appeals, documentation correction, and denial resolution.
  • Verify claims compliance with payer guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Work with EMR or data systems to ensure accurate billing capture.
  • Maintain productivity, accuracy, and quality service standards.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and professional communication.

Qualifications and Skills for Certified Medical Coder

 

To excel as a Certified Medical Coder, you’ll need a strong foundation in coding, documentation, and healthcare billing processes.

 

Requirements:

  • Current certification: CPC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT (required).
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 1–3 years of procedural coding experience in OBGYN or Orthopedic service lines.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Experience working in EMR systems preferred.
  • Excellent multitasking and organizational abilities.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
