Position Overview

Under the supervision and guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in supporting patient care delivery within the Medical Oncology unit. The CNA is responsible for carrying out assigned duties with accountability, ensuring care is provided in a safe, compassionate, and efficient manner. This role involves direct patient interaction and supports nursing staff in executing care plans consistent with hospital protocols and professional standards. Additional tasks may be assigned based on unit needs and staffing priorities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under the direction of an RN, adhering to established clinical procedures and protocols.

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance.

  • Accurately measure and record vital signs, intake and output, and other relevant patient information as instructed.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients.

  • Transport patients safely to and from diagnostic procedures or other care areas as needed.

  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition or behavior to the supervising nurse promptly.

  • Assist with turning, repositioning, and transferring patients to prevent complications and ensure comfort.

  • Support nursing staff with administrative or clerical duties when necessary.

  • Uphold patient privacy and confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA and institutional policies.

  • Demonstrate respect, sensitivity, and empathy in all interactions with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

  • Collaborate with the care team to deliver efficient and patient-centered care.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet operational and patient care needs.


Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and comprehend English and medical terminology relevant to patient care tasks.


Licensure and Certification Requirements

  • Successful completion of a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.

  • Active CNA certification required at the time of hire.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required and must be maintained throughout employment.


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of six (6) months of recent experience working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in an acute care or similar clinical environment is required.

  • Alternatively, candidates with relevant experience in a military healthcare role—such as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman or U.S. Army/Air Force Healthcare Specialist—will also be considered.

Work Environment and Expectations

  • Work is performed in a hospital setting within the Medical Oncology unit, requiring constant interaction with patients and clinical staff.

  • Must be available for variable daytime shifts, which may include weekends or holidays based on patient census and staffing requirements.

  • Role may involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and assisting patients with mobility.

  • Exposure to infectious materials, bodily fluids, and emotionally challenging situations is expected; adherence to safety protocols is essential.


Compensation and Shift Differentials

  • Base Hourly Pay: $34.10 – $38.76, based on experience and qualifications.

  • Additional compensation may be provided for evening, night, weekend, or holiday shifts in accordance with hospital policies and collective bargaining agreements (if applicable)
