Inpatient Coder II Job Responsibilities
As a Coder II (Inpatient), you’ll play an essential role in reviewing, interpreting, and coding medical records to ensure precise billing and documentation. Your responsibilities include:

Reviewing inpatient health records to identify and code primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures.

Assigning accurate MS-DRG, Severity of Illness, and Risk of Mortality levels based on official guidelines and compliance policies.

Querying physicians to clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation.

Collaborating with Clinical Documentation Specialists to improve coding accuracy.

Validating patient status, admission/discharge dates, and discharge disposition for correct reimbursement.

Maintaining high productivity and quality standards while meeting all compliance requirements.
Qualifications and Skills for Inpatient Coder II
To qualify as an Inpatient Coder II, you should have the following:

Required Certifications: AHIMA or AAPC credentials (CCS, CCS-P, CCA, or CPC).

Preferred: RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator).

Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, DRG assignment, and POA indicators.

Analytical and interpretation skills to ensure accurate code sequencing and compliance.

Proficiency with MS Office, encoder tools, and computer-assisted coding software.
