Key Responsibilities of a Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

As a skilled Certified Professional Coder (CPC), you will:

  • Review complete medical charts and assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for diagnoses, procedures, and complications.

  • Organize and prioritize workloads to meet strict productivity and accuracy standards.

  • Audit documentation and query providers to clarify incomplete or conflicting information.

  • Collaborate with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to ensure precise coding and proper reimbursement.

  • Maintain at least 90% coding accuracy while meeting national productivity benchmarks.

  • Adhere to all compliance, coding, and reimbursement regulations.

  • Mentor and train other coders, assisting in developing departmental policies and best practices.

  • Support patient financial services with coding and billing inquiries as needed.

You’ll also be responsible for ensuring your assigned claims meet payer requirements and for maintaining professional communication with healthcare teams and leadership.


Required Qualifications for Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

To be considered for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) role, candidates must have:

  • A High School Diploma or GED (minimum).

  • Active Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) certification from AAPC (required).

  • At least 1 year of medical coding experience in a healthcare or medical practice environment (preferred).

  • Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM and CPT classification systems.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills for documentation review and clarification.

Applicants must provide their AAPC certification number on their application or resume.
