As a Pulmonary Critical Care Coder, you will handle a combination of clinic and hospital coding, including office visits, pulmonary testing, critical care services, and procedural coding. You’ll act as a vital link between healthcare providers and the billing process, ensuring accuracy in all coding functions.
Your role supports technical and professional services across provider clinics, Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), and hospitals. You will also help maintain compliance with Medicare and commercial carrier guidelines, manage denial reviews, and participate in appeals management when necessary.
Key Responsibilities of the Pulmonary Critical Care Coder

Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for symptoms, procedures, and diagnoses.

Audit provider documentation and communicate coding guidelines to improve accuracy.

Monitor and validate physician charge capture while ensuring compliance with NCCI edits.

Support denial reviews and assist in the preparation of documentation for appeals.

Provide feedback and education to healthcare providers for accurate record documentation.

Serve as a subject matter expert in coding meetings and collaborate with the team to maintain consistency and compliance.

Utilize coding systems, regulatory guidelines, and clinical knowledge to ensure proper reimbursement.
Qualifications Required for Pulmonary Critical Care Coder

Education: Associate degree in Health Information Technology or a recognized coding certification is required.

Preferred Knowledge: Coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding.

Certifications: Must hold one of the following — RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CPC-A, CCS, CCS-P, CCS-H, or COC.

If not certified at the time of hire, certification must be completed within one year.
