Are you a skilled Coder II – Technical seeking a fully remote opportunity? UPMC Corporate Revenue Cycle is hiring a Coder II – Technical to join its expert Coding team. This position offers a chance to handle outpatient coding, including Same Day Surgeries and Special Procedure Coding, while working Monday through Friday during standard business hours. The Coder II – Technical role is ideal for professionals with strong hospital coding experience, particularly in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Modifiers, who are looking to advance in a supportive healthcare environment.


Key Responsibilities of a Coder II – Technical

  • Review and validate coding accuracy and completeness before billing submission using CCI edits.
  • Apply standard coding guidelines and references such as CPT Assistant and Coding Clinics to assign ICD-9-CM, CPT, and DSM IV codes.
  • Use ACEP acuity level or hospital-specific modules for accurate ED coding.
  • Follow department policies to ensure efficient workflows and operational consistency.
  • Participate in team meetings, share process improvement ideas, and maintain continuing education through seminars and updates.
  • Achieve coding accuracy standards of 98% within the first year and meet productivity goals set by management.
  • Assign and verify correct diagnosis and procedure codes, ensuring proper sequencing for accurate reimbursement under DRG/APC/ASC systems.
  • Identify incomplete documentation and issue physician queries for clarification when necessary.
  • Record daily productivity statistics and submit weekly performance reports.

Qualifications for the Coder II – Technical Role

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hospital coding experience.
  • Completion of an AHIMA or AACP-certified coding program, or equivalent (e.g., Bidwell Training School).
  • Coursework must include Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and Medical Terminology.
  • Outpatient coders receive on-the-job pharmacology training; inpatient coders require full coursework.
  • Eligible certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS.
  • Must complete Act 34 clearance.
