Assigns codes to diagnoses and procedures for outpatient medical records using current ICD and CPT coding systems. Coding assignments support:

Work involves critical thinking, extensive use of electronic medical records, and adherence to HIPAA privacy and security regulations. Employees must maintain high ethical standards and demonstrate attention to detail while applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, operative terms, and pharmacology.
Responsibilities

Assign accurate codes to outpatient diagnoses and procedures.

Meet productivity and quality standards in coding assignments.

Continuously review and adhere to changing regulatory requirements.

Use professional knowledge and critical thinking to assign codes according to medical necessity and payment groupings.

Maintain compliance with HIPAA privacy rules when handling protected health information.
Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology required; Bachelor’s in Health Information Management (HIM) preferred.

Extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, operative terms, and pharmacology.

Certification or eligibility in RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCS, or COC and completion of continuing education requirements.

New graduates must complete certification at the earliest available exam dates.

Strong attention to detail, logical thinking, and familiarity with electronic medical records and coding software.
Note: Employees failing certification exams consecutively may be evaluated for continued employment.
