About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Coder I to join our dynamic Coding Services Team. This role plays a vital part in the accurate classification of medical diagnoses, procedures, and services for statistical and reimbursement purposes.

You’ll review medical record documentation, assign appropriate codes, and support compliance with all applicable guidelines—all while working alongside a collaborative team under the guidance of Coding Management.

Key Responsibilities

 Coding (85%)

  • Abstract and assign accurate codes for diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers

  • Meet or exceed productivity, timeliness, and accuracy standards (95%+ accuracy)

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital and departmental procedures

 Education & Training (10%)

  • Complete required training and participate in coding meetings and workshops

  • Submit weekly production logs (if applicable)

  • Keep coding credentials up to date

 Desk Procedures (5%)

  • Assist in developing, updating, and reviewing desk procedures for assigned areas

Qualifications

 Education

  • High School Diploma or GED – Required

 Experience

  • Less than 1 year of prior medical coding experience or completed coding training – Required

  • Experience reviewing medical record documentation – Preferred

 Certifications (Any one of the following required)

  • CCS – Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA)

  • CPC or CPCA – Certified Professional Coder or Apprentice (AAPC)

  • AHIMA membership also accepted

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding

  • Critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; Epic experience preferred

  • Must pass a coding proficiency test (≥70% accuracy)
