Coder I – Key Responsibilities
As a Coder I, you will:

Review medical records from multiple EHR systems, identifying principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.

Examine documents such as lab results, radiology reports, discharge summaries, consultations, and treatment records for coding accuracy.

Assign codes using hospital and professional coding guidelines, Coding Clinic directives, federal regulations, and CPT/HCPCS standards.

Collaborate with the RACE team and healthcare providers to clarify documentation for complete and accurate coding.

Utilize EMR tools (EPIC) and coding software to ensure precise code assignment.

Maintain strict confidentiality of patient medical and financial information.

Update historical records, submit delete files, and communicate corrections to the RACE team as needed.
Essential Skills for a Coder I
A successful Coder I demonstrates:

Strong knowledge of human anatomy, disease processes, and medical terminology.

Proficiency in EMR systems, including EPIC, and encoder software.

Qualifications and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; specialty training or completion of a billing/coding diploma required.

Minimum of 1 year of related work experience preferred.
