As a Hospital Reimbursement & Coding Specialist, you’ll be responsible for assigning and sequencing diagnosis and procedure codes using electronic medical records and encoder systems. This includes ensuring compliance with CMS regulations, coding guidelines, and internal policies. This remote role requires handling all inpatient and outpatient cases, from emergency department visits and surgeries to complex trauma and critical care cases.
Key Responsibilities of the Hospital Reimbursement & Coding Specialist

Review medical records to accurately assign and sequence all diagnoses and procedures using encoder software.

Code all types of inpatient cases, including trauma, NICU, long-stay, and mortality records.

Code all outpatient encounters, including emergency, observation, and same-day surgery cases.

Validate ADT (Admission-Discharge-Transfer) data fields and ensure proper documentation for physicians and discharge dispositions.

Identify and resolve coding edits, perform corrections for audits and denials, and support the billing team.

Collaborate with leadership and physicians to clarify incomplete or ambiguous documentation.

Ensure adherence to Official Coding Guidelines, CMS rules, and AHA conventions.

Maintain coding quality and productivity standards established by department leadership.
Required Skills and Qualifications for Hospital Reimbursement & Coding Specialist

Education:

Coding certification (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT) from an accredited program required.

Preferred: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or Health Information Technology.

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of coding experience in an acute care hospital required.

Knowledge of inpatient and outpatient payment schemes, including MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, and APCs.

Level 1 Academic medical center experience preferred.

Certifications (Required):

RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, or CPC-H.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in Windows-based systems, MS Office, and EMR navigation.

Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and disease pathology.
