Essential Duties
- Prepares work sites by digging and backfilling trenches, tunnels, and shaft excavations.
- Clears dirt and removes obstructions from work areas, including sewer mains, catch basins, valve basins, water and electrical vaults, and manholes.
- Installs and removes braces, shoring equipment, and sheeting to reinforce excavation sides and prevent cave-ins.
- Builds, repairs, or dismantles concrete and masonry retaining and bearing walls.
- Demolishes old pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, sewers, and catch basins as required.
- Repairs existing pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, sewers, and catch basins as directed.
- Operates various machinery and equipment, including bobcats, skid steers, front-end loaders, forklifts, and electric/manual pallet jacks.
- Excavates and levels ground for concrete base installations.
- Assists skilled tradespeople in constructing scaffolding up to approximately 200 feet above ground level.
- Uses and maintains pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, pavement breakers, sandblasters, and clay spades.
- Utilizes hand tools, including shovels, picks, and sledgehammers.
- Mixes and pours concrete in specified amounts as instructed.
- Loads and unloads materials and equipment from trucks, ensuring tools and machinery are present and in working order at job sites.
- Assists in lifting and positioning materials such as pipes, valves, hydrants, and castings using pipe sticks, ropes, dollies, or other appropriate methods.
- Removes materials from work areas and below-grade spaces using manual or power tools as necessary.
- Supports skilled trades workers by preparing and supplying required tools, equipment, and materials.
- Sets up safety measures, including barricades, cones, and steel street plates, around job sites.
- Removes rock and debris in underground tunnels.
- Marks work zones and underground utility locations with paint for identification.
- Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic around work sites to ensure safety.
- Notifies customers about temporary water service disruptions.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- Completion of a Department of Labor (DOL) Laborer Apprenticeship Program.
- Completion of a City of Chicago Laborer Apprenticeship Program.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a laborer performing construction work for the City of Chicago.
- At least four (4) years of experience as a construction laborer.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
- Certain positions may require a valid State of Illinois Driver’s License based on departmental assignments.
- Assignments involving forklift operation require employer-provided training and evaluation in accordance with OSHA standards enforced by the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL).
