Position Overview

The Counselor, Apartment Living Program (ALP) supports students who are blind or visually impaired in developing independent living skills such as meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. The Counselor also assists students with recreation, communication, and social development while ensuring safety and well-being in all activities.

This is a 10-month, full-time position (August–June) with shifts from 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise students after school in developing independent living and social skills

  • Coordinate and staff community trips, ensuring safety and planning needs are met

  • Support structured and unstructured recreation and leisure activities

  • Provide direct care in a structured environment with clear expectations and positive reinforcement

  • Escort students on and off campus

  • Transport students home (to/from CSB)

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor campus environment (25 acres)

  • Work with blind/visually impaired students and service animals

  • Afternoon and evening hours required

  • Must comply with State of California Personal Leave Program (PLP 2025) effective July 1, 2025

Qualifications

  • Must meet Minimum Requirements listed in the Counselor, School for the Blind classification specification

  • Valid Driver’s License (Required)

  • Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment/Test (Required)

  • FBI and DOJ fingerprint clearance (Required)

  • Time management, punctuality, and flexibility

  • Initiative, professionalism, and sound judgment

Compensation

  • Additional $200/month Recruitment & Retention bonus (for 10 months per year)

  • Placement depends on experience and classification level
