About the job

We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist to join the Digital, Data and Technology Team on a temporary basis for 12 months. In this role you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, exploring and visualizing data, and making recommendations to address complex problems and enhance public safety.

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyse and visualize data to uncover patterns and insights that support policing activities.
  • Develop and implement statistical models and machine learning algorithms to predict and prevent crime.
  • Cleanse, prepare, and manipulate data for analysis.
  • Ensure data is used ethically and in compliance with relevant regulations, particularly regarding privacy and security.
  • Work with other team members, including police officers and analysts, to develop data science solutions.
  • Present findings and recommendations effectively to stakeholders, including senior police staff/officers and external partners.

Skills and experience:

  • A STEM-based degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent experience.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent numerical, technical, and analytical skills. Proficiency in Python and/or R.
  • Data Science Methods: Knowledge of a range of data science methods and techniques, such as natural language processing (NLP), regression, and network analysis.
  • Adaptability: Ability and versatility to pick up new technologies and methodologies.
  • Communication: Ability to translate complex problems into business solutions and communicate them to non-technical stakeholders.
