Data Scientist

About the Role

As a Data Scientist at Thomson Reuters Special Services (TRSS), you will play a key role in managing, analyzing, and interpreting both in-house and customer data. Your work will involve text mining, predictive modeling, risk scoring, algorithm development, and data quality enhancement. Collaborating closely with TRSS Analysts, you will help identify, design, and implement statistical analyses using open-source, proprietary, and customer data. Your insights will contribute to the development of analytical metrics and tools that support TRSS analysts, customers, and our existing product offerings.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to directly influence the features and capabilities of our applications. You will engage with customers to gather requirements, contribute to Statements of Work (SOWs) for new projects or proofs of concept (POCs), and oversee solution implementation. As a technical expert, you will ensure seamless data integration and analysis, aligning customer requirements with our technical capabilities. This role demands a proactive, mission-driven individual who is committed to delivering exceptional results.


Key Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze both structured and unstructured big data to support descriptive and predictive analytics.

  • Collaborate with scientists, product teams, and content specialists to perform big data aggregations, symbology mapping, and dataset transformations.

  • Apply machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and statistical methodologies to derive insights and enhance business processes.

  • Develop software tools for efficient analysis and manipulation of large-scale datasets.

  • Effectively communicate findings through data storytelling and visualization, catering to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Guide the architecture of big data processes, ensuring scalability, robustness, and reproducibility.

  • Work with interdisciplinary engineering and research teams to design and deploy data-driven solutions.

  • Engage directly with customers, applying AI-driven solutions to their mission-specific data and ensuring successful implementation.

  • Develop scalable, automated processes for model development, validation, and deployment.

  • Identify and research emerging trends in AI, exploring innovative applications for Thomson Reuters and TRSS data assets.


About You

You are a strong fit for this role if you have:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical/Biological Sciences, GIS).

  • 3-5 years of experience in data analysis, programming, and reporting results to stakeholders (education may substitute for some experience).

  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Java.

  • Intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to experiment in dynamic environments with minimal oversight.

  • A solid understanding of distributed computing concepts.

  • Experience collaborating with subject matter experts to gather input and refine data-driven solutions.

  • Expertise in ML, NLP, and statistical methodologies.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to test, adapt, and implement ideas end-to-end.

  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills.

  • A proactive, self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. national security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with big data analytics.

  • Familiarity with graph data modeling.

  • Knowledge of search engines, classification algorithms, and recommendation systems.
