Position Summary

The Deli Service Clerk is responsible for preparing, displaying, sampling, and educating customers about the foods we sell while providing exceptional customer service. This role involves maintaining hot and cold bars, grab-and-go items, and service cases, as well as actively engaging customers with product knowledge, including ingredients and preparation methods.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Engage with customers in a friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable manner.

  • Respond to customer inquiries using product and ingredient knowledge.

  • Actively sample products and promote their quality and preparation.

  • Support team members in merchandising and promoting store products.

  • Promote membership opportunities whenever possible.

Food Preparation

  • Prepare and cook deli items, salads, and other foods following recipes.

  • Maintain product abundance in the service case and food bar throughout the shift.

  • Follow opening, closing, stocking, and sanitation procedures.

  • Collaborate with Specialty Foods Coordinator and store management for cross-promotions.

Department Maintenance

  • Ensure deli floor, shelves, hot bar, and cold bar are fully stocked and clean.

  • Participate in inventories and staff meetings.

  • Maintain compliance with food safety and cleanliness standards.

Safety

  • Follow all company and safety policies.

  • Immediately report unsafe equipment, hazards, or incidents to a supervisor.

  • Operate all equipment safely to prevent injury.

  • Support sustainability efforts by reducing waste, reusing materials, and properly recycling and composting.

  • Conserve water and energy whenever possible.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Experience:

    • Prior experience in a deli, restaurant, or culinary environment strongly preferred.

    • Culinary school graduate a plus.

  • Certifications: California Food Handlers certificate (must be obtained prior to or at time of hire).

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Strong verbal communication skills for customer interaction.

  • Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Problem-solving abilities and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency in internet software, inventory systems, order processing, spreadsheets, and word processing.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for long periods, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and use hands/arms for extended tasks.

  • Lift and move up to 50 lbs safely.

  • Tolerance for kitchen-related odors, oils, and temperature variations.

Work Environment

  • Moderate to high noise levels.

  • Exposure to temperature changes.

  • Professional kitchen setting.
