Job Summary

Bowdoin College is seeking a Dining Hall Cashier to join the Dining Services team at Thorne Hall. This role is essential in creating a welcoming dining experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The cashier is responsible for greeting patrons, verifying identification, processing transactions, and providing exceptional customer service.

This is a part-time, on-call position with flexible scheduling (morning, afternoon, or evening shifts available).

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist dining service patrons with a positive and professional attitude.

  • Verify student/employee IDs and eligibility for meal access.

  • Operate the computerized checking system for board and debit plans.

  • Handle credit card transactions accurately and securely.

  • Provide information regarding menus, campus directions, and events.

  • Restock cashier station supplies (deposit slips, charge forms, candies, etc.).

  • Perform light cleaning tasks such as wiping tables, bussing dishes, sweeping/mopping, and basic food preparation.

  • Report system issues promptly and ensure smooth dining hall operations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Strong customer service orientation and friendly attitude.

  • Dependability and punctuality.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and follow written/verbal instructions.

  • Basic math skills for transaction handling.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Knowledge of good personal hygiene practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience as a cashier or in a customer-facing role.

Work Schedule

  • Onsite, part-time role (less than 20 hours per week).

  • On-call to cover absences at the front desk.

  • Flexible scheduling available (mornings, afternoons, evenings).

Additional Information

  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory background checks (criminal, education, and other applicable verifications).

  • Pre-placement physical required.
