Position Summary

The Donor Care Management Physician is responsible for the day-to-day medical management of organ donors, optimizing organs for transplant, and guiding donor care staff. This role serves as a medical liaison, providing expert consultation and clinical oversight to ensure successful donation outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consult on potential organ donor referrals and provide expert guidance to staff.

  • Lead donor management case huddles and develop comprehensive care plans.

  • Provide daily consults on all active donor cases.

  • Direct clinical interventions and medical management for complex donor cases.

  • Review charts in real-time or retrospectively to optimize donation potential.

  • Collaborate with attending physicians on interventions to improve donor physiological status.

  • Facilitate or guide special procedures, including echocardiography, bronchoscopy, dialysis catheter placement, central/arterial lines, CRRT, radiology interpretation, and chest tubes.

  • Contribute to development and modification of donor management guidelines, policies, and procedures.

  • Serve as Radiation Safety Officer for the Donor Care Unit.

  • Participate in national organ donation conferences and provide educational instruction to hospital staff.

  • Deliver relevant presentations such as Grand Rounds to hospitals within the DSA.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD or DO licensed to practice in Michigan.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in critical care, trauma, or related practice.

  • ACLS certification (to be obtained within one year of employment).

  • Board certified or eligible in a primary specialty (e.g., Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine).

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of critical care, trauma, or related practice experience.

  • Prior experience in a transplant center or organ/tissue procurement organization.

  • Fluent in English (written and verbal).

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams) and other operational technology systems.

  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
