Job Summary
The Estates Craftsperson plays a critical role within the Estates Department of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring the safety, reliability, and continuous operation of all engineering services and building infrastructure across Trust-owned sites.
This position requires hands-on engineering expertise to support the maintenance, repair, and improvement of essential systems and facilities, contributing to the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities

Perform routine and reactive maintenance on a range of engineering systems and building infrastructure

Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on mechanical, electrical, or building systems

Operate and maintain plant equipment such as boilers, ventilation units, water systems, etc.

Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to reduce downtime and improve reliability

Ensure all work complies with Trust policies, statutory regulations, and health & safety standards

Maintain accurate records of completed work, inspections, and asset condition

Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies

Collaborate with other Estates team members and departments to support Trust-wide services
-
Participate in on-call and shift duties as required (subject to rota)
Person Specification
Essential:
-
Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering trade (e.g., mechanical, electrical)

Proven post-apprenticeship experience in building services or engineering maintenance
-
Good working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or controls

Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills

Understanding of health & safety legislation, including COSHH and risk assessments

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Good communication skills and a customer-focused approach

Willingness to participate in training, development, and flexible working patterns
Desirable:
-
Experience working within the NHS or other healthcare environments
-
Knowledge of HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) standards

IEE 18th Edition wiring regulations (if electrical trade)

BOAS / Legionella / BMS experience
