Job Summary

The Estates Craftsperson plays a critical role within the Estates Department of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring the safety, reliability, and continuous operation of all engineering services and building infrastructure across Trust-owned sites.

This position requires hands-on engineering expertise to support the maintenance, repair, and improvement of essential systems and facilities, contributing to the delivery of safe and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and reactive maintenance on a range of engineering systems and building infrastructure

• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on mechanical, electrical, or building systems

• Operate and maintain plant equipment such as boilers, ventilation units, water systems, etc.

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to reduce downtime and improve reliability

• Ensure all work complies with Trust policies, statutory regulations, and health & safety standards

• Maintain accurate records of completed work, inspections, and asset condition

• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies

• Collaborate with other Estates team members and departments to support Trust-wide services

• Participate in on-call and shift duties as required (subject to rota)

Person Specification

Essential:

• Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering trade (e.g., mechanical, electrical)

• Proven post-apprenticeship experience in building services or engineering maintenance

• Good working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or controls

• Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills

• Understanding of health & safety legislation, including COSHH and risk assessments

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Good communication skills and a customer-focused approach

• Willingness to participate in training, development, and flexible working patterns

Desirable:

• Experience working within the NHS or other healthcare environments

• Knowledge of HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) standards

• IEE 18th Edition wiring regulations (if electrical trade)

• BOAS / Legionella / BMS experience
