Job Summary
The Roads Department is seeking a skilled Electrician A to join our team. Under direction, this role ensures the proper operation, installation, and maintenance of electro-mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices used in road construction and traffic systems. The Electrician A also provides field supervision on various projects, ensuring all work meets safety and code standards.
Key Responsibilities

Install, maintain, and repair traffic signals, wiring, fixtures, and control systems

Perform overhead/underground electrical installations, including poles and conduits

Modify installations for efficiency and code compliance

Read and follow diagrams and blueprints for concealed wiring in new construction

Perform load computations and standard electrical calculations

Splice and connect wiring, fixtures, and equipment such as switches, relays, and circuit breakers

Test circuits for continuity and safety compliance
-
Maintain emergency generators, lift stations, and related electrical systems

Conduct inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs
-
Operate truck-mounted aerial lifts, scaffolding, and snow plow trucks during winter maintenance

Participate in on-call rotation, random drug/alcohol screens, and other assigned duties
Qualifications
Required:
-
High school diploma or GED
-
Minimum 4 years of electrical experience

Valid Michigan driver’s license and insured vehicle

Journeyman Electrician License
-
Ability to obtain Michigan CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement within 1 year of hire
Preferred:
-
CDL Class A/B with endorsements at hire

Traffic signal experience

100-Foot Pole Certification
Competencies & Skills

Strong knowledge of electrical installations, codes, and blueprint interpretation

Skilled in conduit installation, wiring, splicing, and emergency system maintenance

Ability to supervise field operations, work independently, and maintain confidentiality

Effective communication in English (multilingual ability preferred)

Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs, climb, bend, kneel, and work in various environments (indoor, outdoor, construction, confined spaces)
Work Environment
-
Outdoor and construction site work with exposure to cold, heat, moving equipment, fumes, and noise

Physical demands include climbing, lifting, bending, walking long distances, and working at heights

Participation in emergency management duties as required by state and county law
