What You’ll Do
As a Substation Technician, you’ll be responsible for hands-on electrical work at energized and de-energized distribution and transmission substations. You’ll operate heavy equipment, perform construction and maintenance tasks, and support critical infrastructure—rain or shine.
Key Responsibilities:

Climb steel structures, operate aerial lifts, and work at heights

Perform substation construction and preventive maintenance

Drive and operate vehicles and heavy machinery for long distances

Safely handle and work with materials such as mineral oils, SF-6 gas, battery acids, paints, and solvents

Support compliance with NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards

Perform work outdoors in all weather conditions

Adhere to all safety protocols and Dominion Energy standards
Qualifications
Required:
-
High School Diploma or GED
-
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
-
Comfortable working at heights and outdoors 90%+ of the time
-
Must obtain a Class A CDL learner’s permit within 1 month of hire
-
Must obtain Class A CDL with HAZMAT endorsement within 6 months (with company training)
-
Willing and available to work planned and unplanned overtime
Preferred:
-
Current CDL (Class A) with HAZMAT
-
Previous electrical utility or substation experience
-
Familiarity with tools and equipment: forklifts, aerial lifts, pneumatic/hydraulic tools, painting/cutting gear

Hiring Process
This position requires a Modern Hire Electrician Virtual Job Tryout (online assessment). Candidates must receive a “Recommended” result to move forward. Assessment time: ~45 minutes.
