Position Summary

The Energy Systems Data Scientist plays a vital role in developing, managing, and analyzing data inputs, outputs, and system connections within Pattern Energy’s internal modeling suite (WIS:dom), which supports capacity expansion and production cost simulations. As Pattern Energy’s data architecture continues to evolve, this role will expand to support the broader Energy Systems & Planning (ESP) team in delivering insightful, actionable market and asset performance analytics. The ultimate goal is to enable robust analysis of North American energy markets and provide strategic guidance on opportunities and risks across Pattern’s operational and development portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Management & Analysis: Develop, manage, and interpret input/output datasets used in simulation models through the WIS:dom suite. Deliver insights and reports to the ESP team and cross-functional groups.

  • Data Integration: Source, validate, and integrate large datasets—such as demand forecasts, renewable resource availability, market trends, and regulatory constraints—into modeling workflows. Translate raw data into model-ready formats and maintain version control documentation.

  • Automation & Optimization: Streamline and automate recurring tasks to improve the accuracy and efficiency of model inputs and outputs. Contribute to pipeline development supporting automation of modeling processes.

  • Modeling Infrastructure Development: Collaborate on building robust pipeline infrastructure to reduce manual interventions in model execution, particularly in the transition to a high-performance computing environment (HIVE).

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with modelers, software developers, analysts, GIS specialists, and transmission planners to ensure modeling data reflects real-world operational conditions and aligns with business objectives.

  • Operational Data Support: Assist with the development of real-time products for operations, accounting for different data structures and requirements compared to traditional modeling environments.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Emphasis in Data Science or Data Engineering preferred.

Experience

  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in energy trading, renewable energy development, or energy forecasting, analytics, or market research.

Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • Familiarity with capacity expansion and production cost modeling tools or energy market software.

  • Experience handling energy-specific datasets such as grid networks, load profiles, and market pricing.

  • Advanced data wrangling, particularly with time series, spatial, and network-based datasets.

  • Proficiency in Python and related libraries (e.g., pandas, numpy, geopandas, networkx) and strong coding practices (e.g., Git).

  • Experience with ETL processes, feature engineering, and deploying data science workflows on platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, MLflow, Airflow, etc.

  • Solid experience with cloud platforms—preferably Microsoft Azure—and handling infrastructure and services for large-scale data applications.

  • Ability to create and share compelling data visualizations across teams and stakeholders.

  • Experience in monitoring system logs, troubleshooting pipeline failures, and responding to technical issues such as code or API errors.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly for complex energy market modeling.

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to translate technical findings into insights for non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and coordinate across teams.

  • Familiarity with additional cloud providers like AWS or Google Cloud Platform is a plus.

Compensation

The expected base salary range for this position is $90,000 to $122,000 USD. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as location, experience, education, and skillset. In addition to base pay, full-time employees at Pattern Energy are eligible for a performance-based bonus structure.
