Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating one or more types of power construction equipment to excavate, move, load, and grade earth or construction materials at job sites. This position requires extensive travel and a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and precision.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate heavy construction equipment at job sites.

  • Grade or redistribute earth to meet construction specifications.

  • Move, load, or unload construction materials and heavy objects.

  • Install equipment or attachments on machinery as needed.

  • Signal directions and safety warnings to coworkers.

  • Perform daily equipment inspections and safety checks.

  • Coordinate equipment actions with crew members using hand or audio signals.

  • Identify underground utilities before excavation.

  • Make emergency adjustments, repairs, or routine maintenance on equipment.

  • Take preventative measures to avoid hazards, such as utility lines or falling objects.

  • Study instructions, plans, and diagrams to determine job requirements.


General Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment use and material handling.

  • Assist other equipment by providing traction or pushing when necessary.

  • Support team operations with additional tasks as required.


Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Minimum 1 year of heavy equipment operating experience in construction.

  • Strong knowledge of safety requirements and adherence to regulations.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction specifications, safety manuals, and maintenance guides.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods in equipment cabs.

  • Regular use of hands, feet, and coordination to operate machinery.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

  • Must have strong vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception).

  • Exposure to mechanical parts, loud noise, and extreme hot or cold weather conditions.

  • Repetitive motion and physically demanding tasks required daily.
