Position Summary

Winchester Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Farsi/Dari Interpreter and Family Liaison to support Afghan students and families across our school division. This role coordinates translation services, assists with parent communication, and serves as a cultural and linguistic bridge between families and schools.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring equitable access to education and services, especially for families supported through the Afghanistan Supplemental Appropriations Acts (2002 & 2022).

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and fulfill interpretation/translation requests (Farsi, Dari, Pashto) across 7 schools

  • Support parent-teacher meetings, special education sessions, and other school communications

  • Act as liaison between schools and refugee support agencies, such as Church World Services

  • Assist staff in addressing home-school issues involving non-English-speaking families

  • Provide interpretation and guidance during IEP meetings or sensitive discussions

  • Meet regularly with teachers, counselors, principals, and educational teams

  • Perform other duties as assigned in alignment with WPS policies

Required Qualifications

  • Fluent in English and Farsi/Dari (spoken and written)

  • Pashto proficiency is a plus

  • High school diploma or GED (Bachelor’s degree preferred)

  • Experience working with children or in an educational/interpreter role

  • Strong communication, cultural competency, and collaboration skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to draft correspondence and interpret school policies

  • Skilled in handling sensitive issues with discretion and empathy

  • Comfortable working in both school and office settings

  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication across multiple languages

  • Ability to apply reasoning to standardized and occasional non-standard situations

Physical & Work Environment

  • Primarily sedentary with occasional lifting (up to 40 lbs.)

  • Work across schools and central office settings

  • Visual and vocal communication essential for daily tasks

  • Quiet, climate-controlled indoor environment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly Pay: $21.00–$32.34

  • Full-time benefits package included

This position is grant-funded through September 30, 2026, specifically supporting Afghan school-aged children and their families (ASA-eligible).
