Facility Coding Inpatient Complex Coder

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform coding and abstracting for mid-tier complexity acute care services at all Banner hospitals.

  • Review medical records to code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG, and APR-DRG classification systems.

  • Ensure ethical and accurate coding in compliance with regulatory requirements and AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding.

  • Analyze medical information and consult with providers to clarify missing or incomplete record information.

  • Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other relevant patient encounter information (discharge disposition, attending physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, etc.).

  • Provide coding quality assurance for assigned records in compliance with CMS, Medicaid, OIG, HCFA, and professional standards.

  • Mentor less experienced staff members as needed.

  • Work independently using specialized expertise, adhering to defined rules and departmental productivity/quality standards.

 Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge; Associate’s degree in healthcare preferred.

  • Certifications: CCS, CPC, COC, RHIT, RHIA, or other AHIMA/AAPC-approved coding certification in active status.

  • 3+ years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility or healthcare system.

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM/PCS coding principles, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, and classification of diagnoses and operations.

  • Ability to work efficiently in a remote setting using coding software, abstracting systems, and common office programs.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

  • Previous experience in a large, multi-system healthcare organization.

 Additional Information

  • Flexible 8-hour shifts between 7 AM – 7 PM, with production as a key focus.

  • Coding Assessment required within 48 hours of a successful interview.
