Fellow within Critical Care

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Clinical Fellow to join our Critical Care team, supporting services across both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital. This exciting role will complement our junior and middle grade rotas to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality, patient-centred critical care.

You will play an essential role in:

  • Reviewing and managing patients on the Critical Care Units

  • Assessing referrals from across the hospital

  • Participating in cardiac arrest and trauma teams (adult and paediatric)

  • Performing critical care procedures (excluding percutaneous tracheostomies)

  • Supporting MDT-based patient care in a flat-hierarchy team environment

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide direct care to critically ill patients

  • Manage ICU admissions and respond to referrals

  • Participate in a 1:8 on-call rota

  • Perform central venous access procedures, including dialysis lines

  • Manage airways independently (advanced manoeuvres expected)

Education and Training:

  • Attend and contribute to departmental teaching (Radiology Tuesdays, Education Fridays, M&M alternate months)

  • Support ongoing education within the department and for junior team members

Leadership and Governance:

  • Demonstrate strong leadership, especially during out-of-hours and emergencies

  • Participate in shared decision-making for ICU patients

  • Engage with Clinical Governance through monthly meetings and M&M reviews

Communication and Teamwork:

  • Maintain high standards of communication with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team

  • Deliver sensitive and compassionate conversations around complex or distressing situations

Research and Development:

  • Support recruitment to ongoing research studies

  • Engage in the department’s research portfolio and act as an Associate Principal Investigator if desired

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Minimum 12 months experience in Anaesthesia

  • 12 months of resident Intensive Care Unit cover

  • Proficient in advanced airway management and central venous access

  • Up-to-date Life Support certifications (ALS, PALS, etc.)

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualifications (e.g., FRCA Part 1+, FFICM, EDIC)

  • Previous NHS experience

  • Interest in education or research
