Company Overview
The Financial Accountant I/II plays a vital role in maintaining and analyzing complex financial records for the City, including managing banking operations and fund transfers. This position supports the preparation of financial statements, ensures compliance with accounting standards, and assists with audits and reporting. Working under general supervision, the incumbent is expected to apply independent judgment and initiative to complete assignments efficiently and accurately.
The final classification (Financial Accountant I or II) will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities:

Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, accounting records, and reports for accuracy and compliance.

Support month- and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations and journal entries.

Manage daily cash activities and bank reconciliations; ensure alignment with general ledger.

Maintain subsidiary ledgers and balance sheet schedules; reconcile discrepancies.

Assist with internal and external audits; prepare necessary schedules and documentation.

Review departmental budget reports and support the annual budgeting process.

Process and verify payables, including vendor inquiries and transaction postings.

Assist with payroll-related analysis, tax filings, and workers’ compensation reporting.

Coordinate risk management tasks such as insurance claims and reporting.

Administer and reconcile contracts and grants (e.g., Community Development Block Grant).

Maintain compliance with tax regulations, prepare returns, and ensure accurate reporting.

Develop and improve accounting systems, processes, and documentation.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years in accounting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong understanding of public finance, GAAP, and municipal accounting procedures.

Proficiency in financial analysis, reporting, and automated accounting systems.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, analyze complex data, and meet deadlines.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
Additional Requirements:

Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Ability to perform sedentary work with occasional standing and lifting (up to 10 lbs).

Must be available to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
