Job Goal

The FLOAT School Nurse will promote and maintain the health and well-being of students in the school setting to enable them to take full advantage of available educational opportunities. This role supports all six schools in Grafton, coordinating care with principals, the nurse coordinator, staff, students, families, physicians, and community agencies to deliver a comprehensive school health program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Health Assessments: Evaluate the health needs of students in the school setting.

  • Direct Care: Provide nursing care within scope of practice to students and staff with injuries, acute illnesses, or chronic conditions. Administer medications and health care procedures ordered by licensed providers.

  • Health Plans: Implement and monitor Individual Health Care Plans, including emergency action plans.

  • Crisis Response: Respond promptly to medical emergencies on school grounds.

  • Communication: Collaborate with principals, Nurse Coordinator, staff, students, families, physicians, and agencies via phone, email, meetings, and in-person interactions.

  • Student Support: Interact effectively with students experiencing emotional or behavioral outbursts that may become physical.

  • Field Trip Coverage: Attend field trips to support students with health needs requiring nursing supervision.

  • Delegation: Appropriately delegate care tasks, including training and competency validation, within state regulations.

  • Compliance: Complete mandated health assessments and report communicable diseases as required by law.

  • Health Education: Serve as a resource for health information for students, families, and staff.

  • Monitoring & Reporting: Track patterns of illness/injury and assess environmental/emotional factors impacting health and learning.

  • Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by the Nurse Coordinator.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, bend, kneel, and climb stairs as required.

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts (active and in good standing).

  • Experience in pediatrics, school nursing, or community health strongly preferred.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergencies.

  • Flexibility to support multiple school sites in Grafton.
