Grocery Clerk

Position Summary

Grocery Clerks provide prompt, friendly, and courteous service while assisting customers and supporting grocery operations. They maintain stocked shelves, coolers, and displays while helping the department achieve goals for sales, margins, labor efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Stock, rotate, and arrange products according to merchandising and handling procedures.

  • Maintain organized back stock of products and supplies.

  • Take inventory and notify buyers of out-of-stock items.

  • Pull expired or low-quality products and follow disposal procedures.

  • Ensure shelf tags and signage are accurate and in good condition.

  • Receive vendor deliveries, verify counts, and report any quality issues.

  • Assist in training new staff on department procedures.

  • Provide product information and customer assistance in a friendly, professional manner.

  • Stage, stock, and merchandise products as directed.

  • Meet WFC customer service standards.

  • Contribute to a respectful and inclusive workplace.

Organization-Wide Responsibilities

  • Follow all company policies and procedures.

  • Maintain compliance with Minnesota Department of Agriculture and National Organic Standards.

  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and food handling regulations.

  • Support WFC’s mission and community goals.

Additional Duties

  • Maintain cleanliness of department areas and equipment.

  • Report equipment issues or safety concerns to management.

  • Promote ownership and member benefits.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Preferred

  • Experience in retail, grocery, natural foods, or cooperative businesses.

  • Availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Basic computer literacy (web browser, email).

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and handle multiple tasks.

  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to remain calm and objective under stress.

  • Regular, reliable attendance.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.; frequently lift up to 15 lbs.

  • Stand and move around for extended periods.

  • Ability to scan and bag groceries.

  • Operate necessary equipment safely.

  • Safely use sharp cutting tools.

Work Environment

  • Occasional Exposure: Outdoor weather conditions.

  • Frequent Exposure: Wet, hot, cold, or frozen products; fluctuating room temperatures; store cleaning supplies; moving carts and pallets.

  • Constant Exposure: Background music, food odors, allergens, grain and spice dust.
