Introduction
Northwestern Medicine is seeking a skilled Coding Quality Auditor and Specialist to join its world-class healthcare team. The Coding Quality Auditor and Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring documentation accuracy, regulatory compliance, and superior coding quality across the Northwestern Medicine Health System.
Key Responsibilities of a Coding Quality Auditor and Specialist
- Partner with clinical documentation teams to review inpatient accounts, focusing on mortality reviews and improvement opportunities.
- Assess DRG, PDx, secondary Dx, PCS, and POA elements to enhance quality metrics.
- Maintain full compliance with national coding guidelines and healthcare regulations.
- Develop and deliver educational programs to clinical and coding teams.
- Identify strategic improvements for the clinical dashboard and system-wide documentation quality.
- Build and maintain cross-departmental relationships to support educational and strategic initiatives.
- Lead multiple audits simultaneously and design actionable plans from data analysis.
- Represent the department in clinical and executive meetings, sharing insights and recommendations.
- Apply advanced knowledge of quality metrics and ranking methodologies (Vizient, USNWR, Leapfrog, CMS).
- Collaborate with IT, analytics, and innovation teams to design and implement workflow improvements.
- Support advanced projects such as Mortality Review, HAC/PSI Review, and Quality Abstraction.
Qualifications for the Coding Quality Auditor and Specialist Role
Required:
- RHIT, RHIA, or CCS Certification.
- Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist credential.
- Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field (or currently enrolled).
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant coding experience.
- Proven experience in clinical documentation improvement.
- Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
- Strong critical thinking, organization, and time management skills.
- Previous training or educational experience.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in a related field or current enrollment in a Master’s program.
