Medical Coder Job Responsibilities
As a Medical Coder, your primary responsibility is to review and accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes to patient medical records using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, ICD-9-CM, CPT, and 3M coding systems. You will:

Review complete medical records and assign appropriate codes within five days of discharge.

Identify complications and comorbidities to ensure the correct DRG/APR-DRG assignment.

Generate physician queries for documentation clarification to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Collaborate with physicians, the business office, and other departments to resolve documentation issues.

Maintain clean and organized work environments while complying with hospital confidentiality and coding policies.

Assist with new employee orientation, ensure proper record maintenance, and update systems such as Cerner, Soarian Clinicals, and 3M.
Qualifications and Experience for Medical Coder
To qualify as a Medical Coder, you must meet the following requirements:

Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology from a CAHIIM-accredited program.

Current certification with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Strong knowledge of ICD and CPT coding systems and compliance standards.

Excellent communication, organization, and documentation skills.
