Role Overview – What Does a Healthcare Support Worker Do?

As a Healthcare Support Worker, you’ll work alongside nurses and clinical staff to provide essential patient care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Helping patients with mobility, hygiene, dressing, and toileting

  • Supporting mealtimes and assisting with feeding

  • Monitoring vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen levels

  • Ensuring patient comfort and safety across a busy surgical ward

Core Duties and Skills Required for a Healthcare Support Worker

Clinical Tasks You May Perform

Once trained and competent, Healthcare Support Workers may be expected to perform:

  • Basic health checks (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration)

  • Glucose monitoring

  • Oxygen saturation readings

  • Collection and testing of biological samples

  • Wound swabbing and infection control practices

You’ll also participate in holistic patient assessments and help maintain accurate records for multidisciplinary teams.
