Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and credentialed HIM Coding Specialist to join our Health Information Management team. In this role, you will accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-9/10-CM and CPT coding systems for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department records. You will play a key role in ensuring complete, compliant, and timely coding for billing and data reporting purposes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign ICD-9/10-CM and CPT codes to inpatient and outpatient records, including Emergency Department and Same Day Services

  • Ensure codes are sequenced correctly to determine appropriate DRG assignment

  • Abstract clinical information from medical records using Affinity, 3M Encoder, and ChartMaxx imaging systems

  • Verify data such as procedure times, provider roles, observation status, and discharge information

  • Review APC edits and apply modifiers as needed to ensure clean claims

  • Identify and resolve documentation deficiencies and inconsistencies in the medical record

  • Work collaboratively with physicians, HIM staff, and other departments to gather necessary documentation

  • Participate in audits and maintain a high standard of coding accuracy and compliance

  • Provide backup coding support for Home Health as needed

  • Attend ongoing training and participate in educational opportunities for continued professional development

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of required coursework or degree for credentialing through AHIMA

Licensure/Certification

One or more of the following credentials is required:

  • RHIT – Registered Health Information Technician

  • RHIA – Registered Health Information Administrator

  • CCS – Certified Coding Specialist

  • CCA – Certified Coding Associate

Recent HIM or HIT graduates are encouraged to apply if they plan to complete certification within 6 months of employment.

Preferred

  • Membership in the Clinical Coding Society (a division of AHIMA)

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting and computer use

  • Occasional bending, stooping, and reaching overhead

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity within normal limits

  • No lifting, pushing, or pulling required
