Role Overview

The Leonard Stocks Centre, Torbay’s homeless hostel in Torquay, provides accommodation for 29 individuals who have experienced street homelessness. We are seeking a dedicated Hostel Support Worker – 24 hours to join our team, focusing on empowering residents to make positive life changes and supporting their transition to independent living. This role involves collaboration within the Growth in Action Alliance across Torbay to ensure comprehensive support for our residents.

Key Responsibilities of Hostel Support Worker – 24 Hours

  • Work collaboratively to support individuals who have experienced street homelessness, focusing on their strengths and personal goals.

  • Develop and implement individualized support plans in consultation with residents and relevant stakeholders.

  • Conduct risk assessments as needed to address the evolving needs and aspirations of residents.

  • Provide guidance to residents regarding their license agreements, rights, and obligations, reporting any breaches as necessary.

  • Assist residents in preparing for independent living, including facilitating moves and coordinating with support agencies.

  • Support residents in applying for housing benefits and managing personal service charges.

  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the hostel environment, reporting maintenance issues promptly.

  • Advocate for residents in all aspects of housing-related support.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong communication and IT skills.

  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with all clients.

  • Experience in supporting individuals with mental health and/or substance misuse issues.

  • Knowledge of equalities legislation and safeguarding practices.

  • Understanding of the benefits system, including housing benefits.

  • A good standard of general education, including GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalent).

Working Hours and Conditions

The role operates on a rotating shift pattern, including 12-hour shifts from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, covering weekdays and weekends throughout the year.
